Genetic technologies and their integration in the cattle industry is an emerging field in cattle production that producers are exploring to capitalize on production traits, and fine-tune the genetic profile of their herd. The Florida Cattlemen’s Association has partnered with the Florida Cattlemen’s Foundation, in conjunction with the program sponsor Neogen Genomics, to bring “Application of Advanced Genetic Technology in Beef Cattle” to Kissimmee, Florida on February 22 – 23, 2018.

This is a King Ranch Institute for Ranch Management lectureship that will be focused on the following learning objectives:

  • Develop breeding objectives by identifying environmental constraints, marketing alternatives, and the economic relevance of traits.
  • Decipher performance measures, adjusted data, ratios, and Expected Progeny Differences (EPDs)
  • Understand selection accuracy, confidence intervals, and strategies for multiple trait selection
  • Application of advanced genetic tools including genomically enhanced EPDs and marker-assisted management in genetic advancement

A summary of the program provided by the presenters states ” In recent decades, genetic technology has evolved at a rapid pace. Keeping up with the genetic selection and evaluation innovations, and understanding which advancements are practical for your operation can be daunting. This lectureship will not only strengthen the foundational understanding of genetic principles among attendees, but it will also build upon them to enable attendees to apply advanced genetic technologies in the real world of seedstock and commercial cattle production.”
