Tung oil production was once a thriving industry in the area, with 14,000 acres of orchards in north Florida, until a series of late of frosts and Hurricane Camille brought demise. Recently, increased international demand for the high value oil and development the late blooming Spiers variety have re-kindled interests in this high value alternative tree crop.
Dr. Pat Minogue (UF/IFAS Extension Specialist) and Greg Frost (owner of Gulf Coast Tung Oil) would like to invite interested producers to a research tour featuring: a seed orchard, a nursery, and a commercial production operation.

Participants will meet at the intersection of Meridian Rd. and Orchard Pond Rd., Tallahassee (30.594500,-84.287929, approximately 0.5 mile north of Orchard Pond Parkway Toll Road). After visiting the Spiers’ seed orchard north of Tallahassee in Leon County, we will caravan to the Silo Farm in Attapulgus, Decatur County to see the seedling nursery and adjacent new orchard. We expect the event to end around 1:00 p.m. EDT.
