Sustainable Agriculture Research & Education (SARE) Pre-Conference Tour

Want to sample some unique tropical fruits and wines, meet a diverse range of farmers and ranchers, learn about the challenges of balancing water needs in south Florida, and discuss what it means to be sustainable in a changing agricultural landscape? Then join us for the SARE Pre-Tour!

We are excited to share with you some examples of sustainable agriculture at the very southern edge of North America.  Some of the places we hope to visit include a hydroponic protected agriculture farm and event space in a suburban area of Martin County, a water farm operated by one of our award-winning ranchers, a diversified small organic farm and SARE recipient retailing to major grocers, sugarcane and rice farms in the Everglades Agricultural Area around Lake Okeechobee, a demonstration farm run by veterans, UF/IFAS Research and Education Centers, and the Miami-Dade Fruit & Spice Park. Our lunch hosts at the Miami-Dade Extension office are planning a delicious meal of local Cuban cuisine. In the afternoon, we will also be stopping for tropical fruit milkshakes and smoothies at the Robert is Here Fruit Stand, which is listed on the National Culinary Heritage Register. Last but not least, we hope to visit Schnebly’s Winery for a wine tasting and more food; you will be well-fed on this tour! Between stops on the tour bus, Florida SARE will lead us in group discussions about the aspects of sustainability we are seeing at the places we visit. Come join with us as we venture out across south Florida on our two-day pre-tour.
