The hot Florida summer is approaching, and we all need to make sure we focus on hydration in the heat. Dehydration is very common in hot, humid environments. Many people do not drink the recommended amount of water. Many of us have our coffee in the morning and unless we go out to lunch and someone gives us water, we seldom think about water during the day. Another confusing concept is how much water we should drink. Growing up, we were told to get eight glasses of water a day. That is 64 ounces. Let’s see if that adage still holds true today.

How much water should I drink?

The best way to calculate how many ounces of water to drink is to multiply your weight by .67 or 67%. For example, a person weighing 150 pounds would need 100½ ounces or a little over 12½ cups. On the other hand, a person weighing 200 pounds would need 134 ounces or 16¾ cups.

Is that all the water I need?

No, as you sweat, you lose the water you have already consumed. If you are sweating for 30 minutes, you need to replenish your hydration with 12 additional ounces of fluid.

What fluid should I drink?

The main thing to remember when it comes to hydration is, just because it is wet does not mean you are being hydrated. Different fluids are absorbed by our bodies differently. Some alcoholic beverages remove hydration from our bodies as we drink them. Below is an example of how our bodies absorb some common beverages:

  • Water absorbed at 100%
  • Sparkling Water absorbed at 100%
  • Skim Milk absorbed at 90%
  • Buttermilk absorbed at 90%
  • Whole Milk absorbed at 80%
  • Apple Juice absorbed at 88%
  • Decaffeinated Coffee absorbed at 90%
  • Coffee absorbed at 80%
  • Sports Drinks absorbed at 50%
  • Energy Drink absorbed at 40%
  • Wine absorbed at negative 150%
  • Beer absorbed at negative 60%
  • Sake absorbed at negative 180%

  • Liquor absorbed at negative 300%

This is a huge concept to grasp if you plan on being out at the beach with your friends this summer. With this example, a well-hydrated 150-pound person consumes the required 100½ ounces of fluid. Then, at a gathering, they have three glasses of wine. The standard five ounces per glass would mean they have removed 22½ ounces from their hydration after drinking only 15 ounces of wine. Be cognizant of what you add to your coolers this year.

What are the signs of dehydration?

There are many signs our bodies will give us to signal dehydration. Headache, nausea, and muscle pains are common. However, the most common sign of dehydration is thirst. That’s right, if you are thirsty, it is your body’s way of letting you know you need fluids. Just be careful which fluids you choose this summer when you are out enjoying the Florida sun.

Septic System Do’s and Don’ts after Flooding


During and after floods or heavy rains, the soil in your septic system drainfield can become waterlogged. For your septic system to treat wastewater, water needs to drain freely in the drainfield. Special care needs to be taken with your septic system under flood conditions.

A conventional septic system is made up of a septic tank and a drainfield or leach field. Wastewater flows from the septic tank into the drainfield, which is typically made up of a distribution box (to ensure the wastewater is distributed evenly) and a series of trenches or a single bed with perforated PVC pipes. Wastewater seeps from these pipes into the surrounding soil. Most wastewater treatment occurs in the drainfield soil. When working properly, many contaminants, like harmful bacteria, are removed through die-off, filtering and interaction with soil surfaces.

What should you do if flooding occurs?

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) offers these guidelines:

  1. Relieve pressure on the septic system by using it less or not at all until floodwaters recede and the soil has drained. Under flooded conditions, wastewater can’t drain in the drainfield and can back up in your septic system and household drains. Clean up floodwater in the house without dumping it into the sinks or toilet. This adds additional water that an already saturated drainfield won’t be able to process. Remember that in most homes all water sent down the pipes goes into the septic system.
  2. Avoid digging around the septic tank and drainfield while the soil is waterlogged. Don’t drive vehicles or equipment over the drainfield. Saturated soil is very susceptible to compaction. By working on your septic system while the soil is still wet, you can compact the soil in your drainfield, and water won’t be able to drain properly. This reduces the drainfield’s ability to treat wastewater and leads to system failure.
  3. Don’t open or pump the septic tank if the soil is waterlogged. Silt and mud can get into the tank if it is opened and can end up in the drainfield, reducing its drainage capability. Pumping under these conditions can cause a tank to float or ‘pop out’ of the ground, and can damage inlet and outlet pipes.
  4. If you suspect your system has been damaged, have the tank inspected and serviced by a professional. How can you tell if your system is damaged? Signs include: settling, wastewater backs up into household drains, the soil in the drainfield remains soggy and never fully drains, a foul odor persists around the tank and drainfield.
  5. Keep rainwater drainage systems away from the septic drainfield. As a preventive measure, make sure that water from roof gutters doesn’t drain towards or into your septic drainfield. This adds an additional source of water that the drainfield has to process.
  6. Have your private well water tested if your septic system or well were flooded or damaged in any way. Your well water may not be safe to drink or use for household purposes (making ice, cooking, brushing teeth or bathing). You need to have it tested by the Health Department or other certified laboratory for total coliform bacteria and coli to ensure it is safe to use.

Preparing Your Emergency Water Supply

Hurricane season is in full swing and will last through November 30. If you have not prepared your emergency supply kit, now is the time, BEFORE a hurricane is imminent.

The most important item in your emergency supply kit is clean drinking water. Clean water is essential for drinking, cooking, and basic personal hygiene during and after an emergency event.

You may stock up on clean water in one of two ways: by purchasing commercially bottled water from the supermarket, or by bottling it yourself.

If you purchase commercially bottled water, take heed of the use by date. While water does not spoil, per se, the quality of the water can diminish over time.  The bottles may also start to break down as well, causing leakage or contamination.  It is recommended to replace your emergency drinking water supply each year to maintain optimal safety and freshness.

Bottling your own water takes a little more effort, but can be just as safe as and will cost less than buying it commercially. Choose the proper containers.  Glass may be sturdy, but it is heavy and can break, so use it sparingly. Plastic two-liter soda bottles and gallon-sized water jugs are ideal for storing water.  Only use food-grade plastic containers and not containers previously used for chemicals such as bleach.

Sanitize the containers with a solution of 1 teaspoon of bleach per quart of water. Rinse the containers with clean water after sanitizing. Once the containers are filled with clean water, seal them with tight-fitting caps, label them as drinking water along with the bottling date, and store bottles in a cool, dry place.

Be sure to follow all boil water notices, especially if your water comes from a municipal source. If you get your water from a private well and are uncertain whether it is contaminated, it is better to err on the side of caution and boil water vigorously for 3 to 4 minutes before using it.

Boiling water is the most effective way to kill harmful bacteria that may be present.  However, another effective means of purifying water is by adding bleach to the water. The type of bleach is important. Only use 5.25% household bleach free of perfumes, dyes, and color-safe or other additives. Eight (8) drops of bleach per gallon for clear water or 16 drops per gallon for cloudy water are the recommended amounts for effective purification.

How much water should you store in your emergency supply kit? At a minimum, one (1) gallon per person (including pets) per day for at least seven days is the recommended amount. This should be enough for drinking, food preparation, and basic personal hygiene. You may want to store more water as a precaution, if necessary.

Summer has arrived!  During the summer months, especially along the Gulf Coast, it is hot and humid.  Keeping the body hydrated is important to maintaining good health.

As the temperature rises in the summer and the body loses more water through evaporation and perspiration, it makes good sense to increase your intake of fluids.  Keep in mind that by the time you notice you are thirsty, you have already depleted your water stores dramatically.  A good rule of thumb is to drink a few ounces of water every fifteen to thirty minutes when you are working or playing hard in the heat.

  • Myth or Fact – You should drink at least eight glasses of water a day.

Myth – On average, the body requires a half gallon of water daily.  That’s the amount required to replace what has been lost through perspiration, evaporation, and body waste.  Milk, juice, and other fluids can be added to your daily total.  Beverages that contain caffeine, such as coffee, tea, and soft drinks, are not good substitutes for water.  Caffeine actually may cause the body to lose water.  The same is true for alcoholic beverages.  They contribute to water loss, not gain, because alcohol acts as a diuretic.

  • Myth or Fact – All water is the same.

Myth – The following guide will help you navigate the sea of choices available:

  • Distilled Water – is pure water with no added chemicals or minerals.
  • Mineral Water – is available in canned or bottled varieties. Many brands include a mix of minerals to improve the taste.  Natural or artificial flavors, such as lime or lemon, may be added to some.  Some varieties add sugar.  Check the label.
  • Soft Water– commercially softened water often is treated with salt and tends to be high in sodium.
  • Sparkling Water– some sparkling waters contain bubbles naturally; others are created with the addition of carbon dioxide.
  • Well Water – is more commonly known as tap water.

 

  • Myth or Fact – Increasing daily water and fluid intake is difficult.

Myth – Actually, there are a variety of ways to increase water and other fluid intake.  Purchase a insulated water bottle and refill it throughout the day.  Add flavor to water.  Infused water is becoming a popular food trend.  Infuse with strawberries, lemons, limes, or other flavorful fruits and vegetables.  Choose foods that contain high levels of water content – for example, watermelon, grapes, and kiwi.  Start the day with a glass of water at breakfast.

  • Myth or Fact – Water aids in bodily functions.

Fact – Water contributes about sixty percent of an adult’s body weight.  Staying hydrated may be a major benefit to increasing energy production.  Increased water consumption can aid in weight loss.  Water aids in the body’s temperature regulation, acts as a lubricant, and cushions around joints.  Water serves as a solvent for minerals, vitamins, amino acids, and glucose.   Because water is vital to bodily functions, the body directs many of its activities toward maintaining balance.

  • Myth or Fact – You can drink too much water.

Fact – Over-hydration can result in water intoxication.  Water intoxication occurs when you consume more water than the kidneys can excrete.  Consuming large amounts of water in a short period of time can result in intoxication.  Remember, you should drink at least eight glasses of water a day – it’s a fact.

According to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), the term “sustainability” has emerged as a result of significant concerns about the unintended social, environmental, and economic consequences of rapid growth.  Sustainability is based on a simple principle: Everything we need for our survival and well-being depends, either directly or indirectly, on our natural environment. Therefore, sustainability creates and maintains the conditions under which humans and nature can exist in harmony, fulfilling the social, economic, and other requirements of present and future generations.

WHEW!  Think about it! Sustainability is important to making sure that we have, and will continue to have, the water, materials, and resources to protect our health and our environment.

Think about it!  Water, for instance. Though we might see water as an abundant resource in Florida, water is emerging as a sustainability issue sparking debate and illustrating the differences in opinions of various water users in Florida. Consider these facts:

  • Heavy demand: High levels of commercial, real estate, and agricultural development have caused withdrawals to increase over time, putting pressure on natural resources.
  • Changes in water use: Agricultural production and public supply are the largest users of freshwater resources in Florida. Large demands occur in municipal water supply systems as a result of landscape irrigation of lawns and golf courses.
  • Environmental consequences: Depletion of groundwater resources can have negative environmental consequences, such as saltwater intrusion into freshwater resources and sinkhole development.
  • Water use strategies: Strategies to balance water use include reducing the overall demand for water (through such means as increased water prices or restrictions) or increasing the supply of water (through such means as desalination of seawater).
  • Water quality: Recent EPA nutrient requirements designed to protect water quality.

Just think about it! Just like there are many levels of sustainability, each and every one of us can draw from advances in science and technology to protect not only our health but the environment.

Just think about it! And then take action. The EPA website has data specific to your area of interest. Information on air, water, land, community, health, and energy can be visualized on a map, downloaded, and printed.

Think about it!  Individuals can make a difference! A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step.  Each of us can promote practices to strengthen our natural environment and quality of life, ultimately improving the quality of life for everyone.
