Florida has had its first confirmed case of Porcine Epidemic Diarrhea Virus (PEDv) in piglets in Holmes County.
The diagnosis was made on three-day-old piglets, after an otherwise normal birth. This is the first case of PEDv confirmed in pigs originating in Florida. Michael A. Short, State Veterinarian
PEDv is one of several Coronaviruses that affects swine, causing diarrhea and vomiting, and death of 50 – 100 percent of infected piglets. Though adult pigs can become infected, they generally do not die. Despite federal, state and industry actions since it was first diagnosed in May 2013, PEDv has spread throughout the country.
The primary method to prevent the spread of PEDv is through the practice of good biosecurity measures. The Pork Checkoff developed an information packet to educate producers on PEDv with practical steps to help reduce the risk posed by PEDV to swine operations.
