Friday Feature: Akaushi Cattle in Walton County

This week’s featured video was produced by the Panhandle Ag Extension Team from the Walton County Fall Cattle Seminar, held on September 19, 2019.  Part of the activities of the day was a tour of Windy Hill Ranch, DeFuniak Springs, Florida where they are raising Akaushi cattle.  Ron Fisher has been purchasing full-blood Akaushi cattle from HeartBrand Beef and crossing them with his own cattle herd.  HeartBrand Beef and FPL Foods have branded beef programs that pay premiums for weaned calves sired by Akaushi Bulls.  The reason they pay a premium is that these Japanese cattle have the genetic potential for a high degree of marbling, so they produce carcasses with a high percentage in the prime grade.
