This week’s featured video was produced by the University of Texas at Tyler’s South West Ag Center to address a serious issue, the mental health of farmers. In this video, Grant Heinrich, a Lubbock farmer and crop duster, shares his experience with mental health and suicide. While this video is not funny or exciting, this is an issue that everyone in the agricultural industry should have awareness about.
According to the Texas Agrilife press release use to promote this video,”People involved in agriculture and agriculture-related pursuits often face high levels of stress because so many of the factors affecting their lives and livelihoods are beyond their control. Research has found that those working in agriculture experience higher rates of depression, substance use and completed suicide compared to those working in other occupations. Additionally, data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention shows farmer suicide has increased 40% in the last two decades.”
