This week’s featured video was published by Jason Abraham, Mendota Ranch, who is the inventor of the Brush Bullet , which is a very simple way to treat a serious pest issue. The Red Cedar, (which is technically a Juniper tree) is an invasive brush species of native range in Texas and other Southwestern States. Jason came up with a small round pellet, or as he calls it a bullet, that delivers a herbicide with the active ingredient Hexazinone (Velpar, Tide, Velossa), which is the same chemical commonly used for smutgrass control in the Southeast. Hexazinone can be shot as bullets into a cedar tree and will slowly provide control of the tree after 1″ of rainfall fully releases the product into the soil and the surrounding root system. According to the Brush Bullet Product Label, one pellet (bullet) is approximately 0.0026 lbs. of product / 0.00198 lbs. of active ingredient, with a total of 378 pellets per pound of product, or 0.75 lbs of hexazinone per pound, with an annual maximum application rate of 1 pound of product per acre/year for Pasture/Rangeland use. Also included in the list of species controlled by the Brush Bullet were Tallow, Persimmon, and Privet, which are troublesome species in North Florida. Be aware that this chemical will injure or kill many desirable hardwood species including oak trees. Watch the video to see how this innovative product can be used to control brush in pastures or rangeland, with targeted applications to specific plants.
