The National Association of County Agricultural Agents (NACAA) held their annual professional improvement conference in Dallas, Texas in July 2024. On a tour of some of Texas’ best livestock operations, I had the privilege of visiting RA Brown Ranch and meeting Donnell Brown, the current owner and operator of the registered cattle herd on the ranch. RA Brown Ranch has been managed by the family for five generations dating back to 1895. This week’s featured video was published by Beef Loving Texans (Texas Beef Council) back in 2018 to share the story of RA Brown Ranch, Throckmorton, Texas. RA Brown is an elite cattle and quarter horse operation in Texas, raising Red Angus, Angus, and SimAngus. While their progressive cattle, horse, and forage management are very impressive, what intrigued me most about this family operation is how they have, “Kept the ranch in the family, and the family in the ranch.” This quote from Donnell describes that not only are they a progressive ranching operation, but are focused on the next generation as much or more than their parents did. Watch the video to meet Donnell and Kelli Brown, and their two sons Tucker and Lanham who will be part of the 6th generation of the Brown family to manage this historic ranch. Farm Succession Planning is vital for the transfer to the next generation, and Brown family has shown it can be done well with extensive thought and preparation.
