This week’s featured video was published by the Florida Department of Agriculture to share the story of Cary and Marcia Lightsey, cattle ranchers from Lake Wales, Florida, who were inducted into the Florida Agriculture Hall of Fame in February, by the Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services (FDACS). Cary is a sixth generation Florida rancher who was a true pioneer in the development of the conservation easement programs in Florida. After the tragic early death of his father, Cary and his family were facing bankruptcy from estate taxes, but instead found innovative methods, which included conservation easements, to keep the family ranch going for the future generations. Plus, this family really supported me as I made my start as a UF/IFAS extension agent in Polk County. Watch this video to hear their unique story.
