This week’s featured video was produced by PhytoGen Cottonseed to promote the new varieties they have developed with both root-knot and reniform nematode resistance. In addition, these varieties are also resistant to bacterial blight. Nematodes are a major pest for cotton farmers in the Panhandle. Having the options to select varieties to protect against nematode yield losses instead of applying nematatcides is a quite a breakthrough. Dr. Zane Grabou has been involved in field testing these varieties and shares some prelimary data in his article, What Cotton Cultivars have Resistance or Tolerance to Southern Root-knot and Reniform Nematode? Watch the video to hear what growers and Phytogen field specialists share about the potential of these new varieties. Scientists have made some pretty dramatic genetic improvements in recent years to the major crops we grow in the U.S.
