PRF Insurance Webinar

Cattle and forage producers have no control of rainfall — or the lack thereof. While producers can’t physically plan for drought in the field, there is a way to plan financially for increased feed costs through the United States Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) Risk Management Agency Pasture, Rangeland and Forage (PRF) Insurance program.

Hannah Baker, Beef and Forage Extension Economist for the University of Florida, is working across state lines with extension colleagues Will Secor (University of Georgia) and Adam Rabinowitz (Alabama Cooperative Extension System) to educate cow-calf producers on the benefits of the PRF insurance program.  Rabinowitz (AL) said, “This is an insurance program targeted to producers of perennial forage for grazing and hay. “The Rainfall Index (RI) PRF program provides an insurance product that is heavily subsidized and available in every Alabama, Georgia, and Florida county,” Rabinowitz said. “When rainfall is low, relative to historical averages, this insurance product will pay indemnities on eligible policies to help producers cover replacement feed costs or lost revenue.

The first part of this multi-year educational project was to deliver in-person programs in each state to help producers assess needs and risks last fall. This fall, a webinar is being delivered on September 18th, 2025, from 7:00-8:30 pm eastern time (6:00 to 7:30 central). Similar to the in-person workshops, producers will learn how PRF fits into their operation’s overall risk management strategy to mitigate losses from limited rainfall.
