Three years ago this week, on October 10, 2018, Calhoun County, Florida received a direct hit from Category 5 Hurricane Michael. This was one of the most powerful storms to make landfall in US history. All of Calhoun County experienced severe damage, but its vast timber industry was uniquely devastated. However, three years later, thanks to the efforts of local citizens, legislators, and forestry industry representatives and advocates, the county and its signature industry have begun to recover. This video, produced by the National Association of State Foresters, tells the story of Michael’s devastation to the vital forests the county depends on and the determined folks who are cleaning up, replanting, and rebuilding the future timber industry in Calhoun County.
