Dr. Ednaldo (Ed) Borgato joined UF/IFAS as the new Weed Scientist, at the West Florida Research and Education Center (WFREC), near Jay, Florida. Ed earned his bachelor’s degree in Agronomy and master’s degree in Weed Science from the University of Sao Paulo, in Brazil. He received his Ph.D. in Weed Science from Kansas State University. Prior to his current position, Ed worked as a Postdoctoral Research Fellow at Michigan State University performing research on herbicide-resistant weeds.
At the WFREC, his research program will focus on weed biology, ecology, and integrated weed management of current and emerging problematic weeds in Florida, with emphasis on agronomic field, forage, and emerging specialty and bioenergy crops. His team will investigate the impact of incorporating chemical, cultural, and mechanical tactics, developing strategies to optimize inputs, promote sustainable weed management, and environmental stewardship.
Ed will build on his predecessors’ work to generate new information to support grower decisions with the goal of diversifying management practices in Florida. He is also interested in establishing partnerships to evaluate how new products and novel technologies can benefit the cropping systems in the Panhandle. He is looking forward to interacting with stakeholders to discuss practices for weed management that can be more effective in the short and long-term in the region.
