Friday Feature: Improving Mature Bahiagrass Quality with Grazing Management

This week’s featured video was produced by the Panhandle Ag Extension Team‘s own Cheryl Mackowiak, Soil Specialist and Doug Mayo, Jackson County Extension Director.  Last summer, as a demonstration for the Grazing Management Field Day, Dr. Mackowiak compared techniques to improve the quality of a mature bahiagrass pasture.  From time to time there are situations where producers gain access to a field of bahiagrass that for some reason has been left unmanaged for an extended period of time.  This might be a field that has undergone a change in ownership, was offered for use by a neighbor, or perhaps the fences were damaged, which prevented grazing until late summer.  This video compares grazing weekly to a  2″ vs. 4″ stubble height, with and without nitrogen fertilization, and the affect that had on the quality and yield of rank, mature bahiagrass. But, the results from this project are relevant to more traditional management as well.   The data shared in this video was not from a replicated research trial, but the results of this demonstration were worth sharing for comparison with the management of your own operation.
