Friday Feature: Wisconsin Livestock Traceability Program

Livestock traceability has remained a controversial issue across the US, but especially in Florida.  The debate stems from producers not wanting added costs to their operations, and also having concerns about data privacy.  Government agencies want to be able to isolate disease issues quickly, but not at the expense of creating mistrust or adding hardships for the livestock industry.

Livestock production is a primary industry in the state of Wisconsin, so producers and regulatory agencies have developed a consortium to create a traceability system using electronic ID tags to protect the livestock industry from contagious disease outbreaks.  The Wisconsin Livestock Identification Consortium published this week’s featured video to discuss how their system works, and to address the benefits of a working traceability system for consumers, producers, and the regulatory agencies charged with dealing with disease outbreaks.  If the model being developed in Wisconsin is successful, it may help other states develop similar systems.
