This week’s featured video was published by U.S. CattleTrace, which is a non-profit organization, formed by multiple state cattlmen’s associations and private industry, with the mission of securely maintaining and managing the data collected for disease traceability.  In the video, Callahan Grund, U.S. CattleTrace Executive Director, and Dr. Ted Schroeder, Kansas State Livestock Economist, discuss the amendment to USDA APHIS’ Traceability Rule that goes into effect in November.  The big change is that USDA is moving away from the use of both metal ear clips and electronic identification (EID) tags to exclusively using EID tags for all cattle over 18 months that enter commerce starting in November.  So, the traceability rules have not changed, just the tools used to track ownership and movement of cattle. Watch the video to learn more about these regulatory changes coming soon.

Ranchers are not required to tag cows and heifers on the ranch, but they must be tagged before changing ownership.  However, EID tags offer the rancher some ease of management as well, as you can use a visual tag paired with a EID button tag that allows for easier tracking right on the ranch.  For more on this topic, watch the following video from U.S.Cattle Trace:  Using an EID System on Your Cattle Operation.
