Florida’s Fall Foliage – Why 2024 Brought the Best Show in Recent History

The Panhandle isn’t known for its fall foliage.  The best we can normally hope for are splashes of pale yellow amidst a sea of green pine needles, drab brown leaves killed by the first frost, and invasive Chinese Tallow trees taunting us with vibrant colors we know we shouldn’t have.  However, in 2024, you’d be forgiven if you forgot you were in Florida and had instead been transported to a more northern clime where leaves everywhere turned brilliant shades of yellow, orange, purple, and red.  I’ve heard comments from many folks, and I agree, that this is the best fall color we’ve seen here in a long time – maybe ever.  So, why were the leaves so pretty this year?  Let’s dive in.

What causes leaves to change colors in the fall?

First, what makes leaves of deciduous trees/shrubs (plants that shed their leaves in the winter) change color in the first place?  The primary driver of leaf color change is daylength.  During the summer, leaves appear green due to the presence of chlorophyll, which reflects green light, absorbs red and blue light, and is responsible for photosynthesis.  When days shorten in the fall, plants sense that winter is coming and produce hormones that signal leaves to shut down chlorophyll production.  They then initiate construction of a “wall” of cells that seals leaves off from the rest of the plant.  When this happens, existing chlorophyll is “used up”, sugars build up in the now sealed off leaves, and other compounds that give leaves color, anthocyanins and carotenoids, take center stage.  These compounds allow leaves to exhibit the familiar autumnal hues of yellow, red, orange, purple, and brown.  However, plants go through this physiological process of shutting down growth and shedding leaves every year and excellent fall color, like what we experienced this year, doesn’t always result.  There has to be more to the fall 2024 story.

A second factor is required for a great fall foliage show – weather.  According to the U.S. Forest Service, ideal temperature and moisture conditions must be met for leaf color to be its most intense.  Ideal autumn conditions include warm (but not hot) sunny days with cool (but not freezing) nights and adequate (but not excessive) moisture.  Too hot and plants become stressed, lessening fall color potential.  Too cold, and frost can kill foliage – turning it immediately brown and preventing color development.  Too rainy or windy, and leaves can be blown off prematurely.  2024 brought neither extremely hot, extremely cold, or extremely wet conditions, and we were blessed to experience a Goldilocks fall color season.

Did Some Trees Have Better Color than Others?

While pretty much all deciduous trees exhibited their peak color potential this year, there were definitely standouts!  Fortunately, many of the prettiest trees this fall also make outstanding landscape trees.  Be on the lookout for the following trees in nurseries this winter and consider adding a few to your yard to take advantage of the next Goldilocks fall color year:

  • Red Maple (Acer rubrum) – brilliant red fall leaves.
  • Florida Maple (Acer floridanum) – yellow/orange.
  • Deciduous Oaks (Quercus spp) – generally red to purple. Some species like Sawtooth Oak ( acutissima) are yellow.
  • Green Ash (Fraxinus pennsylvanica) – yellow.
  • Swamp Tupelo (Nyssa sylvatica) – crimson to purple.
  • Sweetgum (Liquidambar styraciflua) – highly variable but generally reds, oranges, and purples.
  • Bald Cypress (Taxodium distichum) – burnt orange.

How to Plant a Tree for the Future

January is Tree Planting Time

The colder part of the year is the best time to install hardy trees and shrubs.  All their energy is in the root zone.  They will establish much faster than if you wait until they are actively growing leaves.

However, planting them correctly is critical to their survival.  The top three mistakes that people make are: (1) installing too deeply, (2) leaving the rootball undisturbed, and (3) not applying enough water all the way through establishment of the root system.  Unfortunately, it may be years before the mistakes are noticed.

Here are the ten steps for successful planting:

1. Call 811 and have all underground utilities marked before digging the hole.

Hitting a line can be costly and life threatening.

2. Loosen all surrounding compacted soil within the potential root zone of the tree.

Tree roots are close to the surface and need to be able to push through the soil.

3. If the soil is extremely dry and sandy, amend with the entire area with organic material.

This is only needed in coastal regions.

4. Remove the container from the tree and find the top-most root.

All media covering the root flare must be removed.

5. Prepare the rootball by removing encircling roots and shaving the edges of the rootball.

The rootball should no longer be shaped like the container when complete.

6. Dig the hole slightly less shallow than the rootball.

Make sure the bottom of the hole is firm soil, so sinking will not occur.

7. Place the rootball in the ground with the main root showing just above the soil grade.

Oxygen must reach the roots for new roots to develop.

8. Back fill around the rootball with the surrounding loose soil.

Take care to not cover the root flare.

9. Mulch around the outside of the rootball without covering the rootball.

Apply at least 2-3 inches of organic mulch. No more than 4″.

10. Water immediately to settle soil and then on a regular schedule until established.

Minimum of 1 gal per 3 gal plant, every 2-4 days, for 20-28 weeks. Larger plants will require more water at each event.

Fall and Winter—Florida’s Tree Planting Seasons

While many people think of planting trees in the spring, autumn and winter are ideal for these activities in Florida.  The cooler weather means most trees are no longer actively growing and producing new leaves and fruit, so there are fewer demands on a newly planted tree to start “working” right away.  The dormant winter season allows the trees to acclimate to their new environment and begin developing sturdy root systems.

However, a newly planted tree is only as valuable as the care it’s given when planted.  To ensure a successful tree, important steps to follow include proper placement, planting depth, mulching, and watering.

Before digging, look up and around to make sure there are no overhead or underground obstacles within the reaches of the tree’s mature height or root system.  When digging the planting hole, make sure the hole is 2-3 times as wide as the root ball.  When planted, the topmost root flare (where the roots join the trunk) should be just above the surface of the adjacent landscape.  It is not necessary to fertilize a newly planted tree.  Use mulch to retain moisture in the soil, but do not place it against the tree’s trunk. Finally, water the tree daily, saturating the root ball, for 1-2 weeks then weekly for a year.

It’s autumn and images of red, brown, and yellow leaves falling on the forest floor near orange pumpkins enter our minds.  However, Florida isn’t necessarily known for its vibrant fall foliage, but if you know where to look this time of year, you can find some amazing scenery. In late fall, the river swamps can yield beautiful fall leaf color. The shades are unique to species, too, so if you like learning to identify trees this is one of the best times of the year for it. Many of our riparian (river floodplain) areas are dominated by a handful of tree species that thrive in the moist soil of wetlands. Along freshwater creeks and rivers, these tend to be bald cypress, blackgum/tupelo, and red maple. Sweet bay magnolia (Magnolia virginiana) is also common, but its leaves stay green, with a silver-gray underside visible in the wind.

Bald cypress (Taxodium distichum) is one of the rare conifers that loses its leaves. In the fall, cypress tress will turn a bright rust color, dropping all their needles and leaving a skeletal, upright trunk. Blackgum/tupelo (Nyssa sylvatica) trees have nondescript, almost oval shaped leaves that will turn yellow, orange, red, and even deep purple, then slowly drop to the swamp floor. Blackgums and cypress trees share a characteristic adaptation to living in and near the water—wide, buttressed trunks. This classic “swamp” shape is a way for the trees to stabilize in the mucky, wet soil and moving water. Cypresses have the additional root support of “knees,” structures that grow from the roots and above the water to pull in oxygen and provide even more support.

The queen of native Florida fall foliage, however, is the red maple (Acer rubrum) . Recognizable by its palm-shaped leaves and bright red stem in the growing season, its fall color is remarkable. A blazing bright red, sometimes fading to pink, orange, or streaked yellow, these trees can jump out of the landscape from miles away. A common tree throughout the Appalachian mount range, it thrives in the wetter soils of Florida swamps.

To see these colors, there are numerous beautiful hiking, paddling, and camping locations nearby, particularly throughout Blackwater State Forest and the recreation areas of Eglin Air Force Base. But even if you’re not a hiker, the next time you drive across a bridge spanning a local creek or river, look downstream. I guarantee you’ll be able to see these three tree species in all their fall glory.

ous research in Texas suggested that bats could reduce pesticide costs by over a million dollars within their state, due to the bats’ fondness for pests that damage cotton. Scientists at UF/IFAS recently collected evidence locally that indicates bats are providing valuable assistance with pest reduction for many of the crops grown here too.

During spring and summer of 2018 scientists at UF clarified what the common species of bats were eating in north Florida, south Georgia, and south Alabama. We investigated 161 bats across 21 counties and found that 28% of these bats ate at least one Lepidopteran (moth) pest species, 21% ate a Coleopteran (beetle) pest, and 18% ate a Hemipteran (true bug) pest. In total, 12 different species of agricultural pest species were eaten by these bats.

The moth pests consumed by bats were:

  • Green Cutworm Moth (Anicla infecta)
  • Tobacco Budworm (Chloridea virescens)
  • Soybean Looper (Chrysodeixis includens)
  • Garden Tortrix (Clepsis peritana)
  • Lesser Cornstalk Borer (Elasmopalpus lignosellus)
  • Corn Earworm (Helicoverpa zea)
  • Beet Armyworm (Spodoptera exigua)
  • Fall Armyworm (Spodoptera frugiperda)
  • Red-Necked Peanutworm Moth (Stegasta bosqueella)

The beetle and true bug pests consumed by bats were:

  • Hairy Fungus Beetle (Typhaea stercorea)
  • Tarnished Plant Bug (Lygus lineolaris)
  • Two-lined Spittlebug (Prosapia bicincta)

Three of these pests (Soybean Looper, Beet Armyworm, and Two-lined Spittlebug) were most often consumed by pregnant and juvenile bats. This is good news for growers of crops affected by these pests because you have a sound option for increasing the likelihood of bats helping control them. The trick is to provide the conditions that adult female bats like near the crops these pests feed on (e.g., soybeans, peanut, cotton, corn, sorghum, safflower). Most female bats pick a maternity roost in early spring. A maternity roost is a structure that provides warm, dry, dark conditions for female bats to sleep in during the day, and it is ultimately where they give birth to pups. When selecting a site to set up a maternity roost, female bats look for structures that are large enough to provide shelter for a large number of bats. A roomy structure can accommodate many bats, which allows the flightless pups to keep each other warm while the mothers fly in search of food at night. Installing a bat house like those shown here can provide conditions appropriate for a maternity colony, increasing your chances of having bats help control these insect pests.

Another useful strategy for enhancing pest control services by bats involves creating or maintaining structures that could serve as natural roost sites for bats. The natural structures bats prefer include large trees with cavities, dead and dying trees with peeling bark, oak trees with Spanish moss, and palm trees allowed to maintain their dead fronds. In agricultural areas and suburban areas these types of trees are often in short supply.

Maintaining large, old trees of a mix of species, and supplementing with bat houses, can help ensure there are plenty of roosting options for bats. This, in turn, will increase the likelihood that bats are available to assist with your pest management.
