The Dolphin Tour

I recent took my granddaughter on a dolphin tour out of Pensacola Beach.  It was amazing.  It was a cool October morning, not a cloud in the sky, the winds were calm, the water crystal clear due to the lack of rain over the past few weeks, and the dolphins were out. 

They are amazing animals and always seem to grab your attention no matter how many times you see them.  I was a student at Dauphin Island Sea Lab from 1980-81 and taught there from 1985-1990.  No matter how many times we heard “dolphins” when out on one of the research vessels, everyone had to run over to look.  People do enjoy seeing dolphins.  There is just something about them.

During the tour at one location, we saw a group of them (a pod) feeding on fish in the shallow water.  They would roll and chase, you could see the sand being kicked up from the bottom as they did.  At another location we saw them in breeding mode.  Slower moving, caressing, fluke slapping as they turned all around in the water near us.  The tour guide told us all sorts of dolphin facts, and some great jokes to go along with them.  It was a good program, and my granddaughter was loving it. 

She looked over at me at one point and said, “dolphins use to walk on land”.  I responded that actually their ancestors did.  Dolphins, as we know them, were very much aquatic animals.  This led to thoughts on other dolphin questions I have heard over the years.

What is the difference between a dolphin and a whale?

Size… and in some cases teeth. 

All whales and dolphins are in the mammalian order Cetacea.  Mammalian orders are divided based on the type of teeth they have.  Cetaceans are homodonts, meaning they have only one type of tooth.  For the toothed whales, these are canines, they lack the molars and incisors that many other mammals have.  But some have no teeth rather a specialized fibrous material called baleen, similar to the bristles of a broom, with which they can filter plankton from the water. 

There are over 90 species of cetaceans in the world’s oceans, 21 of those are known from the Gulf of Mexico.  In a recent published survey by the National Marine Fisheries Service, most of the cetaceans in the Gulf of Mexico are of the toothed whale variety and most occur beyond the continental shelf (which is between 60 and 140 miles south of Pensacola).  The only baleen whale in their report was the Byrde’s Whale (Balanopatera edeni).  They estimate about 33 of these whales based on their transect surveys and all of these were found beyond the continental shelf between Pensacola and Apalachicola Florida.  The largest of the toothed whales reported was the sperm whale, which can reach over 60 feet.  They estimate 763 sperm whale in the Gulf, and they were found across the basin beyond the continental shelf. 

But it is the bottlenose dolphin (Tursiops truncatus) that we see on the dolphin tours.  This is a relatively small toothed whale, reaching lengths of 13 feet, though most in the Gulf region are less than 10 feet.  They are the most abundant and most frequently encountered cetacean near shore and within the estuaries and seem to prefer these shallower waters to the open Gulf beyond the shelf.  The National Marine Fisheries Service divides them into stocks based on their geographic distribution.  They report 37 different stocks of bottlenose dolphins in the northern Gulf.  These are divided into western, eastern, and northern stocks, and then subdivided into estuarine stocks.  There are separate stocks for the Perdido Bay and Pensacola Bay groups.  This report indicated the stock size for the Pensacola and Perdido Bay dolphins was unknown, though our tour guide indicated there were about 250 in the Pensacola Bay stock.  The National Marine Fisheries Service did report about 179 dolphins in the Choctawhatchee Bay stock.  The reports estimated over 51,000 individuals for the northern Gulf. 

Though not listed as endangered or threatened by the Endangered Species Act, there is some concern on the smaller estuarine stocks and so they have been labeled as “strategic”.  There has been fishery related mortality with these dolphins in our waters, primarily with longlining and otter trawl operations, but losses are less than four animals/year and do not seem to be impacting their populations. 

What is the difference between a dolphin and a porpoise?

Though many associate the long beak as a dolphin, there are dolphins with short snouts.  Killer whales are actually large dolphins.  The answer goes back to the teeth, as it always does when classifying mammals.  Dolphins have conical shaped teeth where porpoise have more spade shaped ones. 

How smart are dolphins?

As everyone knows these are highly intelligent animals.  They use an audible form of communication that includes squeaks, clicks, and whistles, to keep the pod together.  Researchers have discovered that these audible sounds have a sort of “accent” to them that tells dolphins which pod the dolphin communicating is from.  This appears to be very important being that dolphins from one social pod may not accept others from different one.  I remember in 1993 when a group of five pantropical spotted dolphins stranded on Pensacola Beach.  There were four adults and one 3-month year old in the group.  After failed attempts to return the dolphins back to the Gulf, it was decided to transport them to a quarantine area near the EPA lab on Pensacola Beach. There was a virus spreading through some European populations and they did not want to risk taking them to the Gulfarium.  In route three of the four adults passed away.  The remaining adult was named Mango and the juvenile was named Kiwi.  After a period of time in quarantine Mango passed away leaving on the young Kiwi.  There was a move to return Kiwi to the wild but some of the dolphin experts on scene told me the likely hood of a different pod accepting Kiwi was a risk, and finding her original pod was very unlikely.  After determining the dolphin did not have the virus of concern, they decided to move her to the Gulfarium in Ft. Walton Beach, where she lived the rest of her life. 

How does dolphin echolocation work?

Echolocation is different than communication, in that it is inaudible.  As with communication, the sounds are produced by expelling air through the blowhole.  In the case of communication, there is a muscle that partially closes the opening of the blowhole producing the sounds we hear.  In echolocation this is completely closed, and the sound waves are moved through a fat filled melon near the head.  The shape and density of the melon can be changed by the animal to produce different frequencies of sound but all inaudible to our ears.  These sounds are emitted through the melon into the environment, where they contact something and “echo” back to the dolphin.  These echoes are received in a fat filled cavity of the lower jaw and transferred to the brain – where the animal is then made aware of the object out in front of them.  Some studies suggest that it may be more than knowing there is an object, they may be able to distinguish different kinds of fish.  Though it is most effective within 600 feet, studies show their range may be up to 2000 feet.  Studies have also shown that some species of toothed whales can alter the frequency of these echolocated sounds to stun their prey making them easier to catch. 

Dolphins are amazing animals. 

They live between 30 and 50 years in the wild.  During this time, they form tight social groups, feed on a variety of prey, and produce new members every 2-3 years.  There is so much more to the biology, ecology, and social life of these animals and we recommend you read more.  Once you understand them better, we also recommend you take a dolphin tour to view these amazing creatures.

We continue our series on estuarine and marine fish and wildlife with fish who live on the bottom.

The Gulf of Mexico is a huge ecosystem.  With 600,000 m2 and an average depth of 6000 feet, there is a lot of “blue” out there for fish to find a home.  But oddly enough, 69% of the species describe in the northern Gulf live on the bottom – what we call benthic fish

This makes since really.  In the “open blue” there are few places to hide from predators and prey.  On the other hand, the seafloor has numerous places to hide – so there they are. 

Most benthic fish have a general body design for living there.  They are generally deep bodied, more rounded – as are their fins.  They have a higher percentage of white muscle which makes them very explosive – for a few seconds.  This is how they live.  Blending in with the bottom, waiting for the prey to get within range and then exploding on it.  This white muscle also gives these fish a distinctive taste, different from the red muscle typically found in the open water fish such as tuna. 

In this environment, the sense of smell is very good.  Many have taste and smell buds extended on fleshy appendages called barbels (the “whiskers” of a catfish).  Many will have their mouth on the bottom side of their head for easier eating – though the predators (like the grouper) will still have it directly in front.  Many will make short migrations into estuaries for breeding, but long open ocean migrations are not common.  There are 342 species of benthic fish in the northern Gulf, let’s look at a few.

Eels

Something about these animals creeps us out.  Maybe their similarity to snakes?  Maybe the thought they are electric or venomous – neither of which are true.  There are electric eels in the Amazon, but not in the ocean.  They do behave much like snakes in that they have very sharp teeth for grabbing prey and can use them on fishermen if they need to.  There are 16 species of eels in the northern Gulf.  With the exception of the morays – eels live in sandy or muddy bottoms.  Shrimpers frequently haul them up, and some are even known as shrimp eels.  The American eel (Anguilla rostrata) has a cool life history.  They spawn in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean, a place known to the sailors as the Sargasso Sea.  It is in the middle of the vortex of ocean currents.  The young that catch the northern currents and head to Europe – there they are known as the “European Eel”.  Those that catch the southern swirl end up here in the United States are known as the “American Eel”.  Their young look like thin pieces of plastic with eyes.  Known as elvers they can be found within Pensacola Bay by the thousands when they arrive.  The growing adults move up stream and spend part of their lives in our rivers and springs, before swimming back to the Atlantic and starting the process all over.  In some areas, there is a commercial fishery for this eel.

Catfish

This is a bottom fish that fishermen love to hate.  Marine catfish (Ariopsis felis) are oily and not as popular as their freshwater cousins as food.  So, when fishermen catch them, they tend to toss them on the beach to die – the idea is that there are fewer to breed – an idea that really does not work – they keep catching them.  One interesting twist on this story is that the ghost crabs in the dunes drag the dead ones towards their burrows where they feed on them.  The skull of the sea catfish is very hard – giving them their other common name “hardhead” catfish, or “steelhead”.  When the crabs are finished the hard skull can be found and the bones on the belly (ventral) side resemble the cross.  It is sold in some novelty stores as the “crucifix fish”.  To add to the legend, when you shake it, it rattles.  This has been described at the “soldiers rolling dice” at the crucifixion.  They are actually loose bones.  These “crucifix fish” are pretty neat, and pretty common. 

 The long “whiskers” (barbels) are for finding food buried beneath the sand or mud.  It is also believed they may have a form of echolocation to detect prey.  As if this were not interesting enough – the males carry the developing eggs within their mouths.  Development takes about two weeks and young fish emerge from dad ready for the world.

One other thing the visitor should know – the serrated spine on the dorsal and the pectoral fins can inflict a nasty wound, even releasing a mild toxin.  Most discover this when they step on a dead one tossed on the beach, or trying to get one off their hook – be careful of this.

DrumCroaker

This is the largest family of estuarine fish in the northern Gulf of Mexico – with 18 species described.  The whiting, drum, kingfish, croakers, trout, some perch, and others all belong to this group.  They are popular with fishermen and seafood consumers.  The red drum (redfish) is one of the more popular targets in our area.  Speckled trout (or spotted seatrout) are also a favorite.  Most have the characteristic body of a benthic fish.  Deep bodied, rounded fins, mouth on the belly (ventral) side.  Sea trout have two large “Dracula” looking fangs for grabbing shrimp and other prey.  In most, one has broken off and the angler usually finds only one fang present.  Some species, such as the black drum, will have short “whiskers” on their chins – you guessed it, barbels – and they are used for finding “buried treasure” (food). 

Their common name drum (or croaker) comes from the sounds they produce using their swim bladders.  Swim bladders are large sacs within many fish they can fill with gas and float off the bottom.  The drum-croaker group rub this with internal muscles making resonating sounds that sound like they are “croaking”.  Atlantic bottlenose dolphin can hear this too – and croakers make up a big part of their diet.

Flounder

There are actually two types of flatfish in the Gulf – the flounder and the sole.  How do you tell them apart?

Well, they are born as a typical-normal looking fish, but as they grow one eye begins to “slide” across the top of the head to the other side – both eyes are now on one side of the head – weird right? 

In our part of the Gulf, if the eyes slide to the left side – we call it a flounder, to the right – a sole.  There are a FEW exceptions to this rule – but many call the popular flounder the “left-eyed flounder” as opposed to the “right-eyed” one. 

So why do they do this?

If your eyes were placed on each side of a torpedo pointed head, you would have what we call monocular vision.  This type of vision gives you ALMOST 360° range of view… almost.  So even though you can see what is behind you while facing forward, you do not have good depth perception – so you are not sure exactly how far away it is.  You must either rely on other senses to help you out or get lucky.  Having both eyes on one side (or in front like us) you have binocular vision.  You cannot see behind you, but you can tell the distance of the object in front of you.  This is common for predator fish like flounder.  Many would agree that your mother has both! 

With the eyes on one side of the head, they lose color on the other and then lay flat on one side.  They can bury in sand and wait for prey.  Most species have chromatophores in their skin.  These are cells that allow them to change color, like a chameleon or octopus.  So, they can change their color to blend into whatever bottom type they are on.  What an incredible adaptation. 

There are 17 species of flounder, and they are not easy to tell apart – so just call them flounder.

Christmas”sea” Cheer!

The holiday season is a special time for most of us! There are many creatures that live under the sea that represent many of our holiday traditions.

Small cookie cutter sharks are found in very deep water during the day, at night they migrate up the water column to feed. Cookie cutter sharks attract their prey with lighted photophores. Photophores are lighted organs located on the lower part of the shark. Small fish are attached to the glow, larger fish searching for prey get close enough to the shark and the shark bites the prey.  The cookie cutter shark has specialized sucking lips that attach to the victim. The shark then spins its body around and leaves a cookie cutter shaped hole in the fish.

Ribbon Eels are found in the Indio Pacific. They have long slender bodies and move like ribbons in and through the crevices reefs. They eat live fish. To view a YouTube video of ribbon fish feeding, click here.

Jingle shells get their name as a result of their shells that when shaken together make a jingle like sound. Jingle shells can be found along the beaches of NW Florida. The shiny iridescent shell is strong and very attractive. Many shell collectors use the shells to make jewelry and wind chimes.

Jingle shells are bivalves and live attached to hard surfaces, just like oysters.

Jingle shells are filter feeders, meaning water is filtered through their gills for plankton.

Christmas tree worms are Christmas tree shaped worms that form burrows corals. The tentacles, which form the tree-like structures are used for feeding on plankton and to breathe.  These plumed creatures are a type of polychaete worm.

Christmas tree worms come in many colors and can be found all over the world. They feed by using their feathery appendages, called radioles to capture phytoplankton that floats by the “feathers.”

Christmas tree worms are easily disturbed and will quickly vanish into their burrows as shadows or larger marine life pass by. They return quickly and continue with their sedimentary lifestyles in the coral.

Marine snow gets its name as a result of the fluffy materials that resemble snow falling from the sky. Marine snow is decaying material from plants and animals that have died in the oceans. Marine snow may also include sand, fecal matter and inorganic dust.

Just like snowflakes, marine snow grows as it floats to the ocean depths. Marine snow is consumed by scavengers that live along the deep-sea floor bottom. Check out the video below showing the beauty of marine snow.
